After releasing multiple APUs (rip Intel) and GPUs , AMD just released it's new and shiny "AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution". What is it and should you care about this new released piece of software?? Here are we to help!
--IT'S NOT MAGIC!
AMD FSR is one of the AMD'S open source software suites, with other libraries like TresFX, CAS, ShadowFX, etc. All under the banner of GPU Open platform of AMD FidelityFX super resolution is a post processing method to provide users with more framerates in games without upgrading or overclocking the gpu.
--HOW DOES IT EVEN WORK???
AMD FSR is a post processing upscaling method to provide more performance in games. What it does is that it renders the game at a lower resolution and then uses it's algorithm to upscale it to the desired resolution.
Now it's not the first time AMD has developed an upscaling method for games, after the not so good reactions of DLSS 1.0, AMD released "FidelityFX CAS". The difference between FSR and FCAS is that FSR is getting a marketing advantage of being directly compared to NVidia's now successful DLSS 2.0, FCAS was just released as an AMD only option for upscaling.
The functional differences though is that CAS was solely based on sharpening while FSR upscales the edges of the objects rendered on the screen, thus creating an illusion to the human eye of a higher native resolution.
"FSR includes a sharpening component to extract pixel detail on the upscaled resolution image. It is therefore mutually exclusive with any existing sharpening option that games may already support. AMD recommends that all FSR quality assessments be done against a native image that does not have CAS or RIS enabled." -AMD to GamersNexus
AMD has provided users with multiple quality presets this time with FSR, namely: PERFORMANCE, BALANCED, QUALITY and ULTRA QUALITY, which changes the input resolution based on the desired output resolution and upscales it.
